Meet the J &J of JJ Clay on the Bay

June and Joe make their home in Ashland, Wisconsin. They have been doing pottery for nearly 15 years. Joe does most work on the wheel while June focuses on handbuilding clay pieces. They also collaborate on pieces with Joe building on the wheel and June embellishing the clay. Together they make both functional and artistic pottery for home, work space, and gift giving.

When not playing in the mud, June and Joe enjoy biking, game nights with friends, concerts, and travel.

JJ Clay on the Bay studio is located in downtown Ashland.

Clay Experiences

KIDS CLAY CLASS

The first session of summer Clay Class for Kids ended with a celebration of the creative accomplishments of these fine young artists.
The participants each made two items in directed lessons and also had time to do some free form creations of their choosing.
The students were all really engaged in their work and excited to be working with clay. Their sweet and enthusiastic personalities made it even more fun for the instructor who was blown away with their creative ideas.

Jennifer

Jennifer is an amazing ceramicist building on her extensive background as a former cake decorator. The pieces that she creates are intricate and incredibly well finished. She is an inspiration to me!

Vicki

I had so much fun taking JJ Clay on the Bay’s 5 week pottery class! June was a great teacher – very generous with her time, materials and expertise. She encouraged us to pursue our own ideas and facilitated our success. I highly recommend this class to anyone looking for a creative, fun, and supportive place to learn something new.
-Vicki

2025…Vicki is back for her third round of clay classes to use her artistic talents to create more pottery pieces.

Vicki says, “This is my time to have a creative outlet and I dont want to miss any class time.”

Jennie

I recently participated in a two-day pottery workshop led by June, and it was an incredible experience! Her passion for pottery is infectious, and I gained a wealth of knowledge under her guidance. Following the class, Joe kindly offered to demonstrate how to operate a kiln, which was extremely helpful as I had just acquired one but was apprehensive about using it initially. Whether you’re in search of a new pastime or simply seeking some expert advice, I strongly suggest enrolling in one of these classes.
-Jennie

2025 update…Congratulations to Jennie who went on to open her own home studio.

The Karl Family

We had a group of 3 generations of family members and all enjoyed our lessons! There was opportunity for individual choice with a framework of supportive instruction. We each finished with some cherished items that will be much used in our households.
-Rosa

2025, Three generations of the Karl family returned for another family clay session. Mother Gina, daughters Rosa and Keeley and their children Evelyn and Mace.
